SUMMARY:North Carolina Trip
DESCRIPTION:Registration\n\nTo register for this trip\, pay a $185 deposit
by Sept. 23rd. Write your $185 deposit check to “2026 Trout Quest Trip C
/O Warren Pass”. Checks only. No cash\, please. Please include your name
and phone number. and/or cell\, and email address\, and mail to the addre
ss listed below. Deadline to register is Sept. 23rd\, 2026. Two cabins are
  reserved\, with a total capacity of 16 people.\n\nWe will have Cabins 3 a
nd 4\, as usual. This means there are accommodations for 16 people on this
trip\, eight (8) in each cabin. Cabin 5 will be used for the ladies only
with the coordinator Cari Vota.\n\nPlease\, no cash in advance of the trip
. The checks will be held until the deadline prior to the trip so they can
be returned if someone’s plans change. The deposits will be used to hol
d your reservation and pay toward your portion of the cabin rental fee. A
waiting list will be included with the registration in case someone needs
to drop out. There will be no refunds after September 23rd.\n\nTrip Descri
ption\n\nWe will be fishing on our own\, self-guided\, unless you prefer t
o hire a guide yourself. The Nantahala and Tuckasegee Rivers in the area a
re stocked and have delayed Harvest regulations over portions of those str
eams. There is a trophy water section on the Cherokee Reservation where yo
u will need an extra permit to fish. Here is the link.\n\nhttps://visitche
 rokeenc.com/play/outdoor-adventure/fish-cherokee/fishing-permit-for-cherck
ee/\n\nSeveral other streams in Great Smoky Mountains National Park offer
 wild trout\, including Deep Creek\, Forney Creek\, Indian Creek\, Noland C
reek\, Socco Creek\, and the Oconaluftee River\, all of which are nearby a
nd accessible. You will likely catch brown and rainbow trout and some broo
k trout. No shortage of trout fishing here.\n\nNew fly anglers or folks ne
w to the area should pair up with someone who has experience with both fly
fishing and the area. We highly encourage folks to travel and fish with a
t least one partner for safety.\n\nA $185 deposit is required to hold your
trip reservation. There may be additional funds required\, depending on t
he number of people who show up and other miscellaneous costs. The accommo
dations are excellent\, priced\, and well-located\, relative to the Tuckas
egee and the Nantahala Rivers.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nLodging\n\nThe cabins are loc
ated between the Nantahala and the Tuckasegee Rivers\, just a short drive
from U.S. Rt. 74 in the Bryson City area. We have two cabins reserved. The
cabins are located at the Smoky Mountain Retreat ( https://www.smokymtnre
treat.com ). We will be using Cabins 3 and 4. Together\, these cabins will
accommodate 16 people or a few more if couples sign up and share one bed.
\n\nThe price is estimated at $40 per person per night\, depending on the
number of people on the trip. The cabins are reserved from Wednesday\, Oct
ober 7th\, through Sunday\, the 11th\, with final checkout on Sunday morni
ng\, October 11th. Each cabin has sleeping areas in different configuratio
 ns\, a complete kitchen\, dining area\, great room\, fireplace\, and a cov
ered front porch. Please see www.smokymtnretreat.com for the cabin layouts
.\n\nWe are required to put down a $185  security deposit. We must leave
the cabins in attractive shape. Any damage will result in extra cost. The
resort employs a cleaning service that will clean the facilities and chang
e linens after we leave. Towels and washcloths are provided\, as are laund
ry facilities during our stay. The $140 per cabin cleaning service charge
has been factored into my estimated cabin costs.\n\nIt has been our practi
ce to hold a dinner for all participants on the Saturday night of our trip
. That cost has been included in the $185 trip deposit.\n\nLodge address:
Smoky Mountain Retreat Vacation Rentals\n\n51 Green Valley Acres Bryson Ci
 ty\, NC 28713 (828) 488-6347\n\nDirections to Smoky Mountain Retreat and S
ettlers Mountain\n\nDirections: I-75 to I-640 East around Knoxville to I-4
 0. From I-40: Take Exit 27 (to Western Carolina University and Maggie Vall
ey)\, which puts you on 74 West. Take 74 West as the main road coming to t
he cabin. Take Exit 64 (Alarka Road) and turn left at the end of the exit
and cross the overpass. Go up Alarka Road for approximately 1-1/2 miles to
East Alarka Rd. Turn left onto East Alarka Road. Approximately 0.4 miles
up East Alarka Road\, turn left onto a gravel drive (Green Valley Acres).
This is the drive for the Smoky Mountain Retreat. The total time depends o
n the route you take\, but the travel time is approximately 6 hours. Once
we know who is attending\, we will e-mail you a map to the cabins.\n\nAlte
rnatively\, from I-40 east of Knoxville\, exit onto South Tenn Rt 66 to US
Rt 441 south through Sevierville\, Pigeon Forge\, and the Gatlinburg Bypa
ss\, over the Smoky Mountains\, to US Rt 19 west\, near Cherokee. Follow U
S Rt 19 west through Bryson City and then US 19 and Rt 74 merge at Alarka
Rd. Turn left and cross the overpass of Rt 74 and follow Alarka Road for a
pprox. 1-1/2 miles to East Alarka Rd. Turn left on to East Alarka Road. Ap
proximately 0.4 miles up East Alarka Road turn left on to a gravel drive (
Green Valley Acres). This is the drive for the Smoky Mountain Retreat.\n\n
There is wi-fi in the cabins however it is inconsistent. Cell coverage is
spotty\, at best\, unless you are closer to Bryson City. There have been s
ome repairs to the cabins since the Spring trip. For example\, A new stove
/oven has replaced the one in cabin 4.\n\nSchedule\n\nWednesday is a trave
l day. You can fish on the way to the cabins or check in and then do a lit
tle fishing. Thursday through Saturday\, pick the stream you want to fish
and go for it. Sunday morning is check out.\n\nMeals\n\nEveryone is on the
ir own for meals! Use the kitchen\, go out or bring in Pizza or KFC. It is
up to you. Bryson City is nearby and offers some local eateries\, and fas
t-food chains. There is a supermarket Bryson City about a 10-minute drive
from the cabins. We can coordinate for evening meals\, and or breakfast as
desired. Lunch is usually somewhere on a riverbank\, so plan accordingly.
As mentioned earlier\, we will have a group dinner on Saturday evening wi
th the costs divided equally among those on the trip.\n\nEquipment\n\nWade
 rs\, Rain Jacket\, Fishing Hat\, Sunglasses\, Landing net\, Nippers\, Hemo
 stats\, Split shot\, Strike Indicators\, Flotant\, Frog Fanny\, Camera\, e
tc. Bring clothing suitable for fall\, and items that will layer well. The
weather could be nice or cold and wet – or both. The mornings will be c
ool and crisp\, and the afternoons may be sunny and warm. Anything from lo
ng johns under your waders\, to shorts at the cabin in the afternoon is po
ssible. Wading and accessing these streams can be very tricky\, felt soles
  are advised\, and a wading staff is a great idea.\n\nRods: 3-6 Wt. rods w
ill fish well. Bring two\, if possible\, just in case one gets eaten by a
screen door or ceiling fan or car door. Floating line and 8’-10’ leade
rs are adequate to fish these streams. Tippets of 5X-7X are recommended.\n
 \nTenkara and Euro-nymphing techniques work well\, too.\n\nSuggested Flies
:\n\nNymphs: in sizes 12 to 18\; Bead Head Prince\, Gold Ribbed Hares Ear\
 , Zebra Nymph\, Sow Bugs\, Scuds\, Golden Stonefly\, Small Black Stonefly\
 , Caddis Pupa\, Copper Johns\, etc.…\n\nStreamers: in sizes 6 thru10\; M
uddler Minnows\, Mallard Minnow’s\, Black\, White or Olive Bead Head Woo
ly Buggers with flash and rubber legs\, Bitch Creek\, Clouser Minnows etc.
\n\nDry Flies: in sizes14-20\; Parachute Adams\, Blue Wing Olive\, Elk Hai
 r Caddis\, Deer hair Emerger\, McGinty’s\, Quill Gordon’s\, Griffiths
Gnat in size 18-22. “Hi-Vis” parachute dries are recommended.\n\nSoft
hackle Wet Flies often work well especially as a dropper behind a dry fly
or bead head nymph. Orange or green are good colors.\n\nTerrestrials: Ants
 \, Beetles\, Hoppers\, Foam Spiders\, June Bugs and San Juan Worms.\n\nFly
Tying\n\nThere is ample room for fly tying\, so bring your stuff\, and do
not forget a tying light if you have one. The lighting at the dinner tabl
e is not particularly good for tying.\n\nLicense\n\nTo purchase your North
Carolina Fishing License online\, Visit http://www.ncwildlife.org/Licensi
ng.aspx . You can look at or download a copy of N.C. Hunting/Fishing licen
 se regulations at http://www.ncwildlife.org/Fishing/LawsSafety/FishingRegu
 lations.aspx#551082-inland-fishing. You will need an Inland\, non-residenc
e fishing license. Annual licenses are valid for one year from date of pur
chase. Short term licenses are valid for dates listed on license. There is
a Wal-Mart in Silva\, NC that will also have North Carolina Fishing Licen
se. Either a valid North Carolina or Tennessee fishing license is required
in Smoky Mountain National Park\, and you will need a parking permit to f
ish in the Park.\n\nFly Shops\n\nLast minute supplies may be purchased at

and Saturday Oct 10\, that’s up to you. Plenty of info on the area’s f
ishing will be available. Everyone should have at least one buddy from the
Women’s Group or the Club Group to fish with\, unless you are personall
 y getting yourself a local guide.\n\n·        Sunday Oct 11th –
check out by 11:00 am. Sleep late\, hike the trails nearby\, see sites\, f
ish some more\, drive straight home\, it’s all up to you.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n
\nMeals\n\n&nbsp\;\nThe final group will discuss and develop meal plans be
fore the trip.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nTypically\, we will eat breakfast and dinner
together\, and brown-bag lunches while out fishing.  Meals can be brought
with you or prepared on-site. Bryson City is nearby. There is a supermark
et in Bryson City about a 10-minute drive from the cabins.\n\n·
Bring a snack to share on Thursday evening.\n\n·        You s
hould bring your own lunch/snacks and water for lunch while fishing.\n\n·
A traditional meal for this trip is a group dinner on Satur
day evening. We (the ladies) have been bringing food to this event. We are
planning to do this with the Club Group cabins that night. Someone can de
cide to contribute for this dinner.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n\nEquipment Suggestions\
