Sneak Preview !

Mike Bryant

Some exciting news about the 2001 B.U.F.F. Sports Show and Banquet. Our keynote speaker will be Mike Lawson of Henry's Fork Anglers. Mike is one of the best known and respected guides in the West. Mike has written several books, articles for many fly fishing magazines, and participated in several videos. You may have seen his article on Henry's Fork in a recent issue of The Fly Fisherman. Mike will be with us for the entire Sports Show and Banquet, providing an entertaining banquet presentation, a Sports Show presentation, as well as be available during the Sports Show.

We have secured the East Gate Holiday Inn again for the 2001 Sports Show and Banquet, but have increased the space. This has proven to be excellent facilities at a reasonable cost, and an easy to reach location for first time attendees. More information about other speakers and exhibitors will be provided in upcoming issues of The BUFFER. Remember to mark your calendar now for February 24, 2001 and plan to bring a friend!!

Pass It On!

Don Prince

Included in this month's Buffer is a full color copy of our new club brochure, complete with directions to our new meeting location. After removing it from your newsletter, fold it into thirds so that the map ends up on the back and the BUFF logo on the front. This is not for you to keep, pass it on to a friend who may be interested in our sport. If you would like more copies, they will be available at club meetings. v

Don't Pee In The Wiva!!

Dave Uckotter

For the past several years Jayne and I have vacationed at the K - L guest ranch about 20 miles northwest of Augusta Montana on the border of the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area. The ranch is located on the confluence of the north and south fork of the Sun River. We have enjoyed horse back riding in the Rockies, hiking, and of course my favorite, trout fishing in the blue ribbon waters of the north and south forks of the Sun River. Rainbow and cutthroat trout are abundant.

Our host and hostess are Dick and Nancy Klick, who are most gracious. The accommodations are rustic but very comfortable and the food is outstanding. So much for that. Let me tell you about my new found friend and fishing buddy Garrett Hanson. Nancy asked Jayne one afternoon, after she came back from a ride, if I was back at the ranch yet because her grandson wanted to meet me. I got back about 4:30, took off my waders, got in my rocking chair on the porch, put my feet up on the railing and had my usual adult beverage. Jayne told me I may have a visitor sometime before dinner and sure enough down the path comes a miniature cowboy. He was dressed in cowboy boots, jeans, flannel shirt and black cowboy hat.

We had a little idle conversation and I invited him to come up on the porch and have a seat. He sat in the chair beside me, a little bit shy, crossed his legs, took off his cowboy hat placed it on his knee and waited for me to start the conversation. During our conversation I learned he liked to play basketball. He didn't care much for trail riding but liked to ride in the rodeo. He would compete in the pole races and the barrel races. I asked if he did any bulldogging, he said no, he wasn't old enough. He does have his own horse though, his name is Easy.

The conversation eventually got around to fishing and the enthusiasm went through the roof. He said he had a few good spots he fishes and always catches trout. His honey holes were close to the ranch because he wasn't allowed to stray to far. He wanted to start fishing right now. I told him we should wait until after dinner and we could take a try at it.

After dinner he was waiting on the porch of the lodge with his "fly pole" and box of flies. Before we went to the river I wanted to see what I was getting into, I asked him to cast his rod. He stripped off about twenty feet of line and threw it right out in front of him. I asked if he could do that again, he said sure. Twenty feet of line went out just like it is supposed to. I thought this little guy won't be any problem on the river, so we took off to his secret spot.

At his "secret spot" he climbed on a big rock and shot out about 20 feet of line. Incidentally, he can tie on his own fly with an improved clinch knot. I was fishing about 40 feet up stream from Garrett and I was watching him out of the corner of my eye. He got a hit, set the hook and landed a 12 inch rainbow. After about three more fish in about 15 minutes he asked,"

 Caught anything yet?"

"No, but I'm trying" I answered.

"Want to use my pole ?"

"No, I'm ok."

"Know what your problem is?" he asked.

"No" I replied.

"Your fly doesn't have wings, you need wings."

He gave me one of his generic flies with wings. I was obligated to tie it on and give it a try. I made my cast, my winged fly hit the water and bang ...a 14 inch rainbow. "See you need wings" he said. After being somewhat humiliated by this mini-fisherman we made a date to go fishing the next evening after dinner. We fished every evening after dinner for the remainder of our stay at the K-L. I would give him some advice on his casting or stripping in a fly and he would give me advice on everything.

One day before dinner he came over to our cabin and asked if I had any leader, he said he was out. I gave him a 9 foot 5X. I asked if he had any tippet....he was out of that also. Not being able to supply him with leader and tippet I decided to show him how to tie his own leaders. One evening after dinner we stayed at the lodge and I showed him how to tie a perfection loop and a surgeons knot. The next day he was to practice his knot tying. The next afternoon he came to our cabin with samples of the knots he had tied that day. He was ready. We tied some leaders and went fishing.

One evening while fishing he put down his "fly pole", went over to a large rock and peed. Walking over to me, zipping up his fly said "you can't pee in the wiva...it kills the fish". Needless to say I'm looking forward to my Montana trip next year to fish with my new little friend. He said he would teach me some rope tricks. If you're ever in Montana in the Bob Marshall, ask for Garrett Hanson. He'll show you how to catch some nice fish in some "nice spots". By the way Garrett is only 7 years old.

B.U.F.F. Conservation Donation

Bob Goldsberry

At the September, 2000 B.U.F.F. Board of Directors meeting, the Board approved a motion to donate $200 to the Highlands Nature Sanctuary. B.U.F.F. has in the past donated monies to this organization whose mission is to bring more wilderness and old growth forests back to eastern North America.

They are now trying to buy a parcel of land called Barrett's Rim - an incredible 114 acres that contains over one mile of cliff face on the Rocky Fork Gorge. This property is adjacent to the Seven Caves.

The organization is offering a hike to see Barrett's Rim on Sunday, October 22 at 1:30 pm. If anyone is interested in going with a group from B.U.F.F., call Bob Goldsberry at 732-0735 for more details.

Thanks!!

Bob and Louise Goldsberry

Bob and I want to thank everyone in the club for their prayers, concerns, flowers and cards we received during his recent illness. Also, a big thanks to all the members who helped out at the meeting and stream monitoring.

NKFF Banquet Is Coming!!

Craig Troescher

Tired of sitting around the house tying flies, why not get out to the social occasion of 2000. NKFF's Millieum 2000 Fall Banquet. Yes, there's another fly fishing club in the Cincinnati area and we're challenging all BUFF members to break with the past and come have some fun with your fly fishing brothers south of the Mason-Dixon line (that's the Ohio River)….

The banquet will be held at the Briarwood Banquet Hall in Hebron, Ky. Saturday, November 4th at 6:00 PM, (One exit west of the airport). It's you're chance to win fantastic gifts chosen especially for you!!! The banquet is less than ˝ the cost of a Bengal's ticket and a couple of beers and at least you'll have a chance to win!!!! Maybe you'll be the lucky person to walk away with 1 of 10 fishing trips, or a Orvis Silver label rod outfit or maybe a $ 325 Renzetti Vice, how about a custom made rod? Sound interesting?? One thing's for sure, if you don't come you've got the same chance as the Bengal's do of winning the Super Bowl….zip, zero, nada, the big goose egg. Get the picture?

You'll need to make a reservation and bring an item to donate for the general raffle table. Early Bird is $28 and cuts off at the October B.U.F.F. meeting, it's $32 after that. Call me for more information….

A Note From The Editor

Mike Bryant

We're always looking for ways to improve The Buffer. Last month, I started a new section in the Buffer titled Tips and Techniques. Personally, I'm always looking for new or better ways to improve my fishing, fly tying and rod building. I thought that The Buffer would be an ideal way to share good ideas with each other.

So if you know of a better "mousetrap", let me know by contacting me at the monthly meetings, US mail, or e-mail or calling me (793-6189). If and when I compile enough ideas from you, I'll publish them in The Buffer. Ideally, I would like to do this on a quarterly basis. But it only works if you share your ideas.

This summer, articles on recent fishing trips have become scarcer than water in a Texas lake! I believe that sharing experiences on new waters as well as old favorites is the "fun" part of The Buffer. It's an important way to learn about new places and new people. So, please remember to take a few minutes to retell your story by submitting articles. I'll take your article in about any written form you can get it to me. Don't worry about the grammar or spelling. As editor, I (and my computer) can help with that part.

Finally, after publishing part of Red Lose's journal, I thought it would be interesting to publish photo's of past B.U.F.F. events covering the past twenty years. So if you have any such photos, let me know. Please include any relevant information, such as names, dates and the event. Space permiting in future Buffer's, I will occasionally publish photo's recalling the rich history of B.U.F.F. I promise to return all photos.

East Fork Stream Monitoring

Dave Uckotter

We finally got our East Fork monitoring in on September 19. The weather was just about perfect, the temperature was in the mid 70's and the water temperature was in the low 60's. Bob Goldsberry asked Tom Jones to do the stream monitoring for him because he just wasn't up to it at this time. So Tom recruited Hank Gilliam and me to do the monitoring.

We did our first sampling below the Batavia wastewater discharge in a riffle about 30 feet wide and 2 feet deep. We found the usual insects and after our count we got a water quality rating of "good". Moving up stream about 100 yards above the discharge we sampled a riffle 10 feet wide and 1 foot deep with faster flow than the first sampling. After our count we got a water quality rating of "Excellent".

Bob Goldsberry, who has been sampling this river for the past six years said these ratings were consistent to the rating he had been getting. The insects we found in the monitoring sites were hellgrammites, water penny larvae, clams, crane fly larva, caddis fly larvae, mayfly nymphs, damselfly nymphs, dragonfly nymphs, leeches, snails and crayfish.

After counting bugs we did a little fishing and caught some pumpkin seeds and white bass. Our next stream monitoring of the East Fork will be sometime in November and will be at the 222 park. Any one who would like to join in is more than welcome. You might like to see what you have been wading with in the stream and what the fish are feeding on. Bring your rod and waders....do some fishing....enjoy a great autumn day.

Membership Renewals

Don Prince

Check the "Dues Expire" date on your Buffer address label to confirm when your annual membership is due for renewal. Renewing on time will avoid interrupting your Buffer subscription, and saves us the cost of special mailings.

Use your annual renewal as an opportunity to update your address, phone number and E-mail address if they have changed. If no changes have occurred, simply mark your check.

There is no need to fill out a membership form for a renewal unless your address or phone number has changed. Mail-in renewal is the most efficient method. Simply mark your renewal check "membership" or "dues", and mail to BUFF, PO Box 42614, Cincinnati, Oh. 45242. You may also renew at monthly club meetings.
